Comic Interpretations Unit Plan: edTPA Submission
The central focus and purpose for this learning segment is for students to explore how comic artists develop dynamic and powerful aesthetic vocabularies that seize and sustain attention through the creative juxtaposition of words and images. Students will strive to meet this objective through the application of traditional and contemporary cartooning techniques such as lettering, speech types, sound effects, emanata, and inking. In congruity with the existing curriculum, this lesson will equip students to create dynamic comics through the understanding and application of these foundational practices in future learning segments. I will use Visual Thinking Strategies when introducing new comic examples to give students the opportunity to analyze and engage in personal reflection and whole group discussions about the aesthetic qualities of famous comics and how it might relate to their own work. Student learning will also be structured through the implementation of the Eight Studio Habits of Mind. Finally, for their summative project of the learning segment, students will interpret intent and meaning of famous works of art and create a one-panel comic interpretation (re-telling) of a famous art work of their choice. The final completed work will include a speech type with proper lettering, emanata, sound effects, line-weight and value. Students will then engage in discourse through the presentation of their work and composing of an artist statement.
